Audition Requirements
Wind Players - Play the excerpts on BOTH sides of the sheet. Improvisation is required. You will use the recording of Blues in Bb by Jamie Abersold and choose either "Tenor Madness", "The Roving Third" or "Pentatonic Blues". Play the head once, one or two choruses of improvisation and then finish with the head. See below for the Abersold recording.

IN ADDITION, RHYTHM SECTION STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING:
Drums - For each style below, play several 8 measure phrases. Play 6-7 measures of "time" to demonstrate the correct style and a 1 or 2 measure fill to lead into the next phrase. Repeat for 2-4 phrases. Stop, start the next style and repeat the process. Styles include: Swing, Latin (Samba is recommended, Bossa Nova is acceptable), Jazz Waltz (brushes recommended), Rock/Funk
Bass - Using the chord symbols in measures 1-16 from "A Doll", play your own chosen notes and rhythms to interpret each of the following styles: Swing (walking bass line), Latin (Samba or Bossa Nova), Jazz Waltz (fast, in one), Rock/Funk. Note: Bass players may bring both the electric and double bass if desired. BASS PLAYERS MUST ALSO DO THE BASS ADDENDUM. SEE THE EXCERPTS PAGE HERE FOR MORE DETAILS.
Guitar/Piano/Vibes - Using the chord symbols in measures -16 from "Proxy", play your own chosen notes & rhythms to demonstrate your ability to comp. Repeat this several times and change your style so it sounds like: Swing, Latin (Samba or Bossa Nova), Jazz Waltz (fast 1), Ballad. Play rhythms, figures, voicings and/or arpeggios to support the style. Note - it is okay to change the rhythmic placement of the chord symbols to accommodate the waltz.
